What this Mars calculator returns
An exact-time result includes Mars’s sign, degree and minute for one explicitly confirmed UTC instant. The audit retains the unrounded tropical longitude, engine version, apparent geocentric convention and historical timezone conversion used to reach it.
Approximate time produces a range across the complete selected window. Unknown time evaluates the whole local civil date. The result states whether Mars stayed in one sign, gives the evaluated degree span and lists every sign if a boundary was crossed.
How sensitive is Mars to birth time?
Mars can spend weeks in one sign, and retrograde loops can extend that stay. For most dates, a few hours of uncertainty changes only the degree by a small amount. The important exception is an ingress: if Mars reaches the next 30-degree sector during the evaluated interval, the sign itself becomes time-sensitive.
The engine therefore samples an approximate window every 15 minutes and an unknown local date every 30 minutes. A detected transition is refined to one second so the output does not miss a brief boundary change between coarse samples.
Retrograde and sign calculation
Apparent retrograde motion describes the direction Mars’s geocentric longitude is changing over time. It does not create a different zodiac or a second method for identifying the 30-degree sector that contains the planet. The range logic takes minimum and maximum observed degrees from every sample, so it remains valid even when the longitude is decreasing.
This route does not display a retrograde badge or interpret what retrograde Mars “means.” That is separate from the factual sign-position lookup.
How the Mars longitude is calculated
Astronomy Engine obtains a light-time-corrected Earth-to-Mars vector and applies aberration correction. The vector is transformed to the true ecliptic and equinox of the requested date. Its longitude is normalized around the 360-degree circle and classified against the twelve equal tropical sectors before formatting.
The method is geocentric and apparent. It is not Mars’s heliocentric orbital longitude and it does not calculate a house, aspect, chart wheel or surface-observer altitude.
Mars boundary and confidence warnings
Any evaluated position within 0.10 degrees of a sign edge receives a warning. A range that crosses the edge displays both signs and records one boundary refinement in the audit. When the full unknown day remains stable, the displayed degree span is an evaluated daily range, not a claim that one of those degrees was the exact birth position.
Why Mars calculators may disagree
Compare zodiac system, UTC conversion and coordinate convention first. A sidereal tool shifts the zodiac framework; a wrong historical timezone shifts the instant; a heliocentric value answers a different question; and a date-only tool may silently use noon. Near 0 or 30 degrees, classifying a rounded number instead of the unrounded longitude can also produce the wrong sign label.
